The Who
The Fediverse Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club is open to everyone! 1)
There is no official or formal way to “join” the #SFFBookClub. You should feel free to participate any month that the book looks interesting to you.
The What
#SFFBookClub is an informal, asynchronous fediverse book club.
Once a month, we vote via mastodon poll for a book to read the next month posted by @picklish@weirder.earth. All participation in the club all happens on the #SFFBookClub hashtag.
We don't have a specific meeting date or time. Instead, it's more of a shared group experience with a particular book over the course of the entire month. During that time, as they read through the book on their own, folks will often post things like:
- initial thoughts
- fun quotes
- drive-by reactions
- comparisons to other books we've read
- full reviews
- maybe nothing at all (but just joining in by reading alone)
Even if you've never joined #SFFBookClub, or didn't vote in the poll, or have read the book previously, please post any and all thoughts to the hashtag any month where the book sounds interesting! You should also feel encouraged to read anything from the backlist of previously selected works and post your thoughts about them on the hashtag as well even if it has been months since the book has been read.
If you have suggestions on books to read in future months (or books that you've enjoyed that you think other people in the club would enjoy), feel free to respond to a poll, post on the hashtag, or edit the proposal list directly.
(However, please don't flood the #SFFBookClub hashtag with self-promotion, especially if you are not participating in any reading discussion! Despite what some people think, it's not a general purpose “scifi books” hashtag.)
The Where
Currently, folks in the club are posting via mastodon or via bookwyrm. Federation can sometimes make things tricky, but you can see what this looks like via an #SFFBookClub hashtag search on weirder.earth or reading.taks.garden or books.theunseen.city. Due to federation, different instances may see different posts.
